The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the basics of writing philosophical texts and to give students the opportunity to practice writing a philosophical term paper. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part we will read and discuss a variety of philosophical texts on the topic Knowledge, Media and Public Discourse. We will examine questions such as: how should we evaluate information from various types of media outlets? What are the advantages and disadvantages of information exchange in conventional and social media? How can we distinguish between information and misinformation? In each seminar we will discuss the content of the reading, the context in which it was written, and the style in which it was written. In the second part of the course, the students put this knowledge into practice. Each student will pick a topic related to one or more of the readings and will be guided through the steps for writing a high-quality philosophical paper. In each seminar we will discuss an aspect of philosophical writing and then students will read, discuss and review each other’s assignments. I will also meet with students individually on two occasions to provide detailed feedback on their drafts.
